Discovering Santa Barbara’s Charming El Zapato House

During my visit to Santa Barbara, I had the pleasure of experiencing the architectural wonder that is the El Zapato house. Situated among a collection of similarly designed homes, El Zapato stands out as a notable landmark in the area. Santa Barbara offers complimentary walking tours that showcase not only El Zapato, but also its sister properties. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to tour this captivating Airbnb residence, courtesy of my friend Kim and her family, who were staying there.

Crafted by the famous architect Jeff Shelton, El Zapato is a three-story architectural masterpiece, renowned for its unique design resembling a shoe – a fitting interpretation of its Spanish namesake. Comprising of two short-term rental units on the ground floor and two additional units on the middle and penthouse levels, El Zapato boasts uniqueness and versatility in its accommodation offerings.

My exploration led me to the second-floor unit known as the “Green Cabana.” This charming apartment features a well-appointed bedroom, a fully equipped kitchen, and a spacious living area. However, the highlight of the Green Cabana undoubtedly lies in its expansive private deck, seamlessly integrated with the dining space, offering a serene outdoor retreat.

Adorned with tasteful decor and intricate tile work in the kitchen, the Green Cabana exudes an inviting atmosphere. Yet, it is the lush greenery, vibrant blooms, and comfortable seating arrangements on the private deck that truly elevate the experience.

For those venturing to Santa Barbara, I highly recommend participating in a guided walking tour to explore El Zapato and its accompanying properties. The opportunity to witness such architectural ingenuity firsthand is sure to leave a lasting impression.
